How cool it was last night to witness the election of the first black President of the United States!
I think back to 1984, in the small town of Annapolis Royal, when Daurene Lewis became the first black female Mayor in Canada. Daurene was a descendent of Rose Fortune, and her family had lived and worked in Annapolis Royal for generations. Daurene was an excellent Mayor, and following her tenure here she left politics and went on to a successful career in Halifax, but she has never given up the family home, or her roots in the area. During her tenure as Mayor, Daurene put all her energy into making the community a better place, not content to be remembered "only" as the first black female Mayor, but wanting to make her mark as strong Mayor in every way.
I'm sure Barack Obama will also continue to do himself proud. He has made his way into the history books already but, like Daurene, he seems the type who will not rest at that, but will strive to do even greater things... to bring his nation to a better place and go down in history as one of the best Presidents we have ever seen. And, like Daurene, he will always remember his roots and this will keep him grounded and in touch with the people he represents.
I look forward to following the work of this leader!
